Crystallography Introduction
Crystallography:
- The study of crystalline solids and laws that govern growth, external shape, and internal structure.
Crystalline:
- Regular internal arrangement of atoms/ions in a long range geometric array.
3-D internal order:
- repetition of a motif (a unit of pattern)
Motif can be:
H20
- anionic groups: (SiO4)-4, (PO4)-3, etc.
- ions: Ca2+, Mg2+, etc.
- atoms: Cu, C, Au, etc.
